Building a Scalable B2B Italian Food Wholesale Platform on Magento 2

Custom Magento Development, Multi-Store Architecture, React Native App Integration & Advanced B2B Workflows

A leading UK-based Italian food wholesaler required a powerful digital platform to serve restaurants, pizzerias, delis, hospitality groups, and corporate buyers. We built a fully customized Magento 2 B2B eCommerce ecosystem from scratch, later upgrading it from Magento 2.3.5 to 2.4.4 while introducing advanced customer segmentation, custom GraphQL APIs, mobile app integration, delivery scheduling automation, and multi-store capabilities.

Overview

Our client operates a UK-based B2B wholesale platform supplying premium Italian food products to hospitality businesses across the country. Their extensive product catalog includes: Pizza Flour & Bases, Cheese & Dairy Products, Pasta, Tomatoes & Sauces, Charcuterie, Frozen Foods, Olive Oil, Coffee, Vegetables, and Restaurant Ingredients & Supplies.

The business required a highly customized B2B commerce platform capable of handling different buyer types, complex account approval processes, delivery scheduling restrictions, and mobile commerce through a dedicated React Native application.

To achieve this, we designed and developed the entire platform using Magento 2 and later executed a major version upgrade while maintaining operational stability.

The Challenges

Distinct B2B Customer Segments

The platform served multiple buyer categories including Restaurants, Independent Retailers, and Corporate Accounts. Each customer type required separate registration journeys, different approval workflows, customized account data collection, and segment-specific navigation and purchasing experiences.

Complex Delivery Scheduling

The warehouse operated under strict logistics rules including daily order cut-off times, non-delivery dates, public holidays, and warehouse closures. Magento's native delivery capabilities could not manage these requirements effectively.

Mobile App Requirements

A React Native mobile application was being developed simultaneously and required customer authentication APIs, product APIs, wishlist APIs, cart APIs, and checkout APIs. Several required endpoints were unavailable within Magento's default GraphQL framework.

Multi-Store Business Operations

The client required multiple websites and stores to be managed under a single Magento installation while maintaining independent configurations, pricing rules, store-specific settings, and shared backend administration.

The Solution

Magento Build & Platform Upgrade

The project began with a complete Magento build from the ground up including catalog architecture, theme development, B2B workflows, customer management, and checkout customization. Following launch, we successfully upgraded the platform from Magento 2.3.5 to 2.4.4, handling dependency management, extension compatibility, database migrations, post-upgrade stabilization, and regression testing.

Delivery Date Blocking System

We developed a custom administration panel allowing warehouse teams to configure non-delivery dates, holiday schedules, cut-off times, and time-slot restrictions. The customized Amasty Delivery Date module dynamically reads these configurations and automatically disables unavailable delivery dates during checkout. This eliminated the need for developer involvement whenever scheduling changes occurred.

Multiple Registration Flows

Separate account creation pages were built for different customer groups. Each registration flow includes unique business information fields, custom validation rules, customer-specific onboarding processes, and approval workflows based on customer type. This ensures accurate customer data collection from the very first interaction.

Group-Specific Navigation

The website navigation dynamically changes based on the customer group. Restaurant customers see restaurant-focused categories, corporate accounts access dedicated purchasing sections, and guests see registration and onboarding-focused menus. This creates a more personalized buying experience for every user type.

Custom Login Plugin

A custom Magento login extension was developed to manage customer approval status, pending account handling, customer group assignment, and login redirections. The system ensures users are immediately placed into the correct workflow after authentication.

Multi-Website & Multi-Store Architecture

We configured a complete Magento multi-store ecosystem allowing multiple storefronts to operate from a single backend. Features include separate websites, multiple store views, scoped configurations, shared product management, and store-specific pricing and promotions.

B2B Checkout Customization

Magento checkout was extensively customized to support wholesale purchasing requirements including minimum order value validation, account-specific shipping methods, delivery date selection, custom order summary fields, and wholesale buyer workflows.

Custom GraphQL API Development

To support the React Native mobile application, we built a complete GraphQL layer extending Magento's native capabilities. The API supports product catalog data, product details, customer authentication, customer account management, cart functionality, checkout operations, and order management. Magento customer APIs were also extended to return additional B2B account attributes required by the mobile application.

Amasty Multi-Wishlist GraphQL Integration

The React Native application required full wishlist functionality through APIs. We developed custom GraphQL queries and mutations supporting create wishlist, retrieve wishlists, view wishlist items, add products, remove products, move products between wishlists, copy products between wishlists, add single item to cart, and add entire wishlist to cart. This provided complete wishlist management within the mobile application.

Design Overhaul

A complete visual redesign was implemented across homepage, category pages, product pages, customer accounts, and checkout experience. A custom homepage recommendation engine was also developed to display curated and dynamic related products outside Magento's native related-product framework.

Analytics Implementation

Both Google Analytics platforms were configured and verified. Tracking included product views, add-to-cart events, checkout progression, conversion tracking, order completion events, and customer journey analytics.
